The STOP Technique

Feeling overwhelmed? STOP to act and respond more mindfully!

S: Stop what you’re doing

Step back, sit down, stand up, or set the pot down. Whatever it is, it can wait. This brief pause can help you avoid reaching your tipping point and act impulsively.

T: Take a deep breath

Now, take a deep breath. Inhale like you’re smelling a flower or taking in the aroma of some freshly baked cookies. Exhale like you’re inflating a balloon and feel the tension subside from your brain and body. Repeat as many times as you need!

O: Observe

As if you’re watching a movie, observe your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations without judgment. Does your chest feel tight? Are you angry? Why? What are your options? Remember that it’s ok to feel how you feel, but you can take this time to choose how you react to it.

P: Proceed with intention

Now that you’re more grounded, you can take what you just learned to make a more intentional choice or action that aligns with your values and goals.
